Hi Bill,
Last year Friends generously gave funding to Mickaboo Cockatiel Rescue. I wanted you to see one of the birds who lived and thrived because of that money.
We always hear about dog and cat success stories -- but rarely about the birds. The photos attached are of Artie (formerly named Poopsie). She came to us in a tiny, filthy cage with no food or water. She had been kept in a dirty kitchen her entire life, and her feathers were covered in rancid cooking grease. She was so dirty, Dr. Bing called me to ask if there was a species of 'brown' cockatoos (the answer was no). The most disturbing thing about Artie was that because of the stress of her confinement, she had picked her own feathers and had started to self mutilate -- something common in poorly cared for, captive large parrots. The hole in her chest was so large, Artie could (and did) stick her head inside it. It was horrifying. I couldn't believe that the poor bird would ever be able to recover. These birds are so intelligent that they can go insane when kept in conditions like Artie was subjected to. Now Artie is happy and healthy, and becoming a fine art icon - thanks to Mickaboo and Friends.

Hi Deb:
At Andrea's suggestion, I'm forwarding you under separate email some pictures. I remember you handing over the haggard remains of a Goffin Cockatoo and little cockatiel. It's only because of your decision to call Mickaboo that both these parrots are thriving.
In fact, Artie (full name "The Artist Formerly Known As Poopsie") now has a cult following. This is thanks to my good friend and Artist John Jablonski. He fell in love with her and her will to survive despite the odds. She has been the subject of some fine art (and some just plain funny art) . . . . Well, you'll just have to see it for yourself.
The plan is to compile his work into a coffee table book. A percentage of sales would go to Mickaboo. Artie is agreeable to signing parties . . .
Thank you once again!!!
Your friend (and former lawyer, when I used to represent SFACC as a Deputy City Attorney),
Margie
